Train, Then Release: How to Pair Face Exercises with Gua Sha and Cupping

Face exercises and tool massage are two halves of the same ritual. One trains the muscles. The other releases them and leaves the skin feeling nourished. The question we hear most is: which comes first?

Our answer: exercise first, massage after

Think of how an athlete works out and then stretches or uses a foam roller. Exercising first gets blood flowing and wakes the muscles up. Massage afterwards eases the tension you just built, and applying oil or serum last means your skin is warm and ready for it. Starting with a cold, dry face and a tool is the less comfortable way round.

The 10-minute ritual

  1. Cleanse (1 minute). Clean hands, clean face, clean tools.
  2. Warm up (1 minute). Gentle circles with your fingertips across the cheeks, jaw and forehead.
  3. Train (3 to 5 minutes). Pick one zone from our starter routine or area guides.
  4. Add slip (30 seconds). A few drops of facial oil. Not sure which? See Nourish and Glow.
  5. Release with a tool (3 minutes). Use your gua sha, roller or cup.
  6. Finish cool (30 seconds). Rebel Ice globes from the fridge across cheeks and forehead.
  7. Moisturise. Press in your serum or day cream.

Choosing the tool strokes by zone

Jaw and neck

Place the gua sha edge under the chin and glide along the jawline to the ear, then from the ear down the side of the neck toward the collarbone. 5 strokes per side. (Full jawline guide.)

Cheeks

From the side of the nose, glide outwards along the cheekbone to the ear. With the cup, keep it moving in slow lifts. Never leave suction in one place. (Cupping guide.)

Forehead

From the centre of the brow, sweep upwards to the hairline, then out to the temples.

Frequency

  • Exercises: 3 to 5 days a week.
  • Tool massage: 3 to 5 times a week, or daily if you use a roller lightly.
  • Take at least one full rest day.

A note on pressure

Gua sha can leave temporary redness. That is a sign you are pressing too hard for the face, so ease off. Our approach is light, gliding and kind.

The takeaway: train first, release second, hydrate last. Ten minutes, three to five times a week.

Keep pressure light around the eyes and mouth. Stop if your jaw clicks, locks or hurts, or if a neck movement makes you dizzy. Skip resistance work on any area treated with botulinum toxin in the last six months, and check with your doctor or dermatologist first if you have an active skin condition, jaw-joint pain, facial nerve problems, or recent facial surgery or injectables. Face fitness is a wellness practice, not medical advice.
